Literature & Cookbooks & References October 26, 2008

Here are a list of books that I have read and that have greatly influenced me.  There are different books for everyone, so if you want some advice on where to start…here goes…

Literature advice: If you are fairly new to a vegetarian diet, or don’t want to become a vegetarian but want to know more about healthy eating then I would suggest reading In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan.  I highly recommend reading Skinny Bitch if you can handle crude humor, this is really the book that pushed me into veganism.  If you’re looking for a spiritual view on eating healthy food then I’d recommend anything by Gabriel Cousens, I am a huge fan of all of his work.  Lastly if you want a book that gives a lot of scientific proof on why a vegan diet is the diet that can prevent the diseases of affluence then you should read The China Study.

Cookbook Advice: If you are new to a vegan or vegetarian diet I would recommend Veganomicon; it is a really comprehensive book and contains appetizers, soups, cookies, cakes and breads.  They also give a lot of helpful hints and fun jokes inside all their recipes.  Now Veganomicon is not always my favorite because they have a lot of wheat and replacer foods (like soy cheese, soy sour cream etc.).  If you are looking for a more holistic approach I would check out The Quick and Easy Organic Gourmet or any macrobiotic cookbook and just ignore the fish recipes in it.  If you’re ready to dive into the raw food lifestyle then the best book to start with would be Rawsome, then if you want something more complicated you can read Raw Food Real World, any of Gabriel Cousens books, and there are plenty of recipes online.

Lastly here are all the books and sources from which I generate my knowledge from

Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser

The Ultimate pH Solution by Michelle Cook

Skinny Bitch by Freedman and Barnouin
